Hand crafted tadelakt

Tadelakt is a specialty finish that requires a great deal of experience, with very few people truly specialising in this craft. The process of applying tadelakt is time consuming and requires exceptional attention to detail. We have been applying tadelakt since 2015, carefully learning and perfecting the craft over time.

What is tadelakt?

What is tadelakt?

Originating in Morocco around 2000 years ago, tadelakt is a textural and dimensional plastering technique. With a finish that resembles natural stone, tadelakt (which means to knead in Arabic) can make an interior piece feel like a hand-carved work of art. It is made using lime plaster, that is rammed, polished and treated to provide its water and mold repelling qualities. Pigment can be incorporated to the mix to create a range of colours.

Tadelakt is iconic of the architecture found in the souks and riads of Marrakech. It was first used in Roman aqueducts and Turkish hammams. Ensuring that tadelakt cures correctly is paramount in ensuring that it performs well and as intended.

It is a durable, breathable and completely seamless coating, which makes it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens when you’re looking for an easy to clean, resistant finish. It is also a suitable finish for wall and to create stand out features in your home such as fireplaces and coffer or side tables.

Although it is a time consuming process, tadelakt is durable in nature

What are the benefits of using tadelakt?

As it is primarily lime and mineral based, tadelakt plaster is free from harmful chemicals and has low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. These are chemical gasses eliminated by certain solids and liquids. Tadelakt’s natural properties also contribute to a healthier indoor environment by allowing walls to breathe. It has a warm, natural and organic feel.
