Product & Process

We use a combination of materials and techniques to achieve different colours, textures and tone. Microcement, tadelakt, Venetian and clay plaster are just some of the finishes that we have on offer. Our materials are generally low in volatile organic compound (VOC) which means you don’t have to worry about high toxicity and harsh chemicals in your home.

The best thing about our coating systems is that they achieve the look and feel you are after without the challenges that come with stone and concrete. Our products allow for versatility and customisation, whereas concrete and stone are not as flexible. Concrete and stone are also restrictive due to their weight, especially when it comes to installation and transport. For example, having your floors or walls reinforced could be an issue when creating large objects with these materials.

Our coating systems and products are also more resistant and are not as porous as others. Overall, if you are after a solution that is practical, highly durable, customised and has a superb aesthetic, then idéék is a great option for your project.

Our sampling process is stringent. We have applied a rigorous system around how we sample ensuring that we present our clients with the best possible representation of their finished product.

We have a wide range of standard colours which we don’t charge a sample fee for; however, custom colours do incur a charge.

We also ensure that we provide accurate information and details before you sign off so that you have a clear understanding of the variations that may occur. Given that all our finishes are custom and handmade, and usually a lot larger than a sample board, they may look slightly different on a larger surface area and in different lighting. We do our best to share our insights with you when you are choosing a finish for your piece so that you can make a well-informed decision.

We use a versatile, strong and environmentally friendly material that we shape and handcraft to your requirements. Originally developed in Scandinavia more than 70 years ago, our product is lightweight and made from recyclable materials. It does not expand or contract so you will not get the cracking you might get using timber. It is also termite and fire resistant making it a good choice for Australian homes.

For various reasons, we generally don’t use MDF, timber or fibre reinforced concrete. However, if you have a project where you would like to specifically coat or create a piece using these materials, please contact us so that we can provide our expert recommendations and solutions.

All idéék pieces are handmade to order. Depending on the scope, our lead time is about 10-12 weeks. This ensures a well-considered and thorough approach on your projects, as well as ensuring our quality assurance process is carried out effectively.

The short answer is yes, but this will mean different things for different projects. Given that every project we create is custom, the installation may be as simple as bringing a table into your home to building a fireplace surround. This will be part of the briefing process too. If there is something that we are not skilled to do, we may have a preferred supplier and we can manage this process for you.

Every one of our projects is made to order and customised to meet the needs of our clients. For this reason, they have all gone home with their real owners. In saying that, we usually have some works in progress in our studio, so please contact us to discuss your needs and we can find a way to accommodate your request.

Our Instagram page also showcases the range of projects that we have been able to deliver on.

Our pieces are highly durable and coated with a resin film to endure those everyday nicks, knocks and spills. However, to ensure the longevity of your piece, it is best to dry up spills promptly and give your piece a daily wipe down using a soft microfibre cloth and a little warm water or a PH-neutral cleaning product. Avoid direct contact with heat, harsh products and cleaners and try not to use abrasive cloths and forceful scrubbing that may compromise the surface.

From time-to-time we recommend some extra TLC with a specialty cleaner that we can provide. Unless otherwise specified, your piece should be indoors or undercover. Read more about what we recommend for outdoor pieces.

Natural surfaces, with everyday use, can begin to show their age. Sometimes this can add to their character. However, if over time your surface becomes severely worn sanding and re-sealing it can restore it to it’s original glory. We’re here to help, so please get in touch and we can talk through the options with you.

It is best to dry up spills as soon as they happen to ensure that they do not penetrate through the sealer. We have completed multiple wine, coffee, oil and various other harmful liquid tests to understand the durability and resistance of our sealers and we believe them to be suitable enough to withstand everyday spills and accidents. If aging occurs a simple light sand and reseal will make it look new again.

Please contact us should you have any concerns about staining to your item and we will do our best to assist you.

Care should be taken when dragging heavy or decorative objects across your item to ensure that you don’t scratch or compromise the sealer and surface. Using a placemat, coaster or soft material underneath may help to reduce the formation of scratches. Placing an item in the one place on your surface for an extended period may lead to discolouration or leave a noticeable change once removed. It may be best to rotate or occasionally check for changes.

Be mindful of using sharp objects near your surface. For example, when using scissors or a knife on a table or benchtop, do not cut directly on the surface. Consider using a stable chopping or protective board that doesn’t slip while you are cutting and that acts as a barrier.

Although our sealer can withstand some heat, excessive direct heat can cause damage. Extra care should be taken to use hot mats, placemats or a suitable protective layer before placing saucepans, serving dishes or hot plates on your surface. Candles should also be used with care.

As part of the briefing process, you should let us know if you intend to keep your item outdoors and exposed to the elements. We will need to ensure that we use the most suitable materials for these conditions. We also recommend and can have made for you a custom outdoor weather resistant cover. This will ensure that your piece can be protected from heavy rain, leaves and dirt.

Once we receive your deposit, we will start working on your project and ordering the materials required to construct your item. If this has occurred, we will be unable to refund your deposit.

If for any reason there is something about your piece that you are unhappy with, we will work back to determine where the issue may have occurred and liaise with you to find a solution.

We do our best to ensure that our briefing is thorough and detailed so that we can meet your expectations. We also share work-in-progress images with you throughout the process to ensure that we are on track and on brief. We trust that our open two-way communication will ensure that you will love your piece.
